A lateral cephalometric study of independent mandibular growth pattern in Korean normal adults

Abstract
A mandibular growth pattern is very important for diagnosis and treatment of mandibular deformities. At present, the concept that mandibular growth is the sum of growth of each one of the mandibular skeletal units(condyle, coronoid, angle,
corpus,
and
dentoalveolar), which have independent growth by a functional matrix theory of Moss, is generally accepted.
The purpose of this study is to set up the normal values of independent mandibular growth bassed upon a functional matrix theory and to get some useful data for diagnosis and treatment of mandibular deformities of Koreans who need orthognathic
surgery.
Lateral cephalograms of 122 Korean normal adults(69 males and 53 females)who have normal occlusion and acceptable facial beauty were used. From Ricketts Xi point, the lengths of independent growth portions of condyle, coronoid, angle, and corpus
were
meassured.
The results obtained suggest that, in Korean normal adults, each mandibular skeletal unit shows a balanced and harmonized growth pattern.
